Location:
Alcott Elementary School, 93 Laurel St., Concord, MA 01742.
Uta is often compared to America’s “First Running Girl”, Louisa May Alcott, so she looks forward especially to joining this annual fun and historic event. As Uta says, “Over 150 years ago, Louisa May Alcott was way ahead of her time. She understood the importance of exercise and running. And now this fantastic group in Concord, led by the indomitable Jan Turnquist, keeps her traditions and healthy lifestyle advice alive.”
This will be the 14th year Uta has served as Honorary Chairwoman for the 5K/10K event. The fun day attracts runners, walkers, “strollercisers,” and wheelchair athletes of all abilities. The event supports the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House, home to Louisa May when she was growing up. The author and her family were devoted to social justice, education and the arts, and youth fitness. Uta and the participants celebrate the 1800’s family for being pioneers in physical fitness and health for both boys and girls.
The now USATF-certified, professionally-timed 10K run takes place on a well-marked course that wends its way through beautiful historic Concord. With ample water stations and healthy snacks provided prior to the start, you will really enjoy joining Uta for a wonderful day of nature and fitness. The event will be held rain or shine, and is a great experience for families looking for fun activities or serious athletes trying for fast times. You can register the morning of the event beginning at 9:30 am.

Uta, who won multiple marathons and was ranked the #1 female marathoner in the world, will speak on “How Do I Become Number 1?” Her discussion will focus on what management can learn from fitness and sports. Uta knows the parallels between competitive sports and the demands of top managers. The way to the upper floors requires perseverance, planning, and insight — and is not a sprint distance.
The symposium, entitled “FIT FOR MANAGEMENT,” will begin at 12:30 pm in the Steigenberger Hotel. The symposium ends at 5 pm, and will be followed by a 5K relay race in the beloved park Tiergarten. Afterwards, social gatherings and discussions will follow.

Uta loves taking part in this annual fun and historic event, which celebrates America’s “First Running Girl.” 150 years ago, Louisa May Alcott extolled the virtues of running for women. “Louisa May just got it,” said Uta. “And such a fantastic group now carries on her tradition. I am honored to be part of this rich history of women and fitness.”
The 5K/10K event is open to all runners, walkers, “strollercisers,” and wheelchair athletes of all abilities. The event supports the Louisa May Alcott Orchard House, home to Louisa May when she was growing up and made famous in her writings. The event honors the famous author and her family, who were devoted to social justice, education and the arts, and youth fitness. They were pioneers in physical fitness and health for both boys and girls in the 1800’s.
Uta will join participants for a fun run on the beautiful historic course in Concord. The event will be held rain or shine, and Uta looks forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. You can register the morning of the event beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A wall 100 miles long separated East and West Berliners and the German people for more than 28 years before it was peacefully torn down in 1989 and the cold war ended. Now the Berlin Wall 100-mile race brings runners to the place where the Wall once stood: combining an Ultra Marathon with a moving commemoration of the victims who sought freedom. This annual event began in 2011, symbolically held on the weekend closest to the August 13, 1961, anniversary of the Wall’s construction. This year the course runs clockwise and follows almost exclusively the official well-known “Wall Trail.” It includes flat and paved roads, forests and fields, with 26 aid stations along the way.
Uta will join the Team Axel Springer relay squad for the event. “I grew up on the East side and lived through this heartbreaking time of separation with my fellow Germans,” said Uta. “I am so honored to be part of a running event that focuses on civil rights for all. I want to thank Team Axel Springer for asking me to run with them.”
Together with her fellow runners, Uta is looking forward to running this trail of history. She has special memories of the first months in freedom when she won the Berlin Reunification Marathon in 1990 that celebrated liberty and unity only three days before East and West of Germany became one country again.

Uta’s speaking session, “Running To Freedom™,” will highlight the historic fall of the Berlin Wall and her first months living in freedom—culminating in her participation in the 1990 “Reunification Marathon” that crossed for the first time from West Berlin through the Brandenburg Gate into East Berlin. She has never forgotten the kindness of the people of the Concord area who later invited her to visit, and it brought home to her that there were similarities between her path to freedom and the journey of so many folks who settled in this part of Massachusetts.
With so much heartfelt appreciation, she now has the opportunity to talk to the people of Concord about how to embrace the possibilities that arise when you feel freedom within and “the power freedom can give to individuals and society to create positive change.”

The first Berlin Marathon took place on October 13, 1974, with just 286 runners. This year an estimated 40.000 marathoners will come together to celebrate the 40th edition of the event, held traditionally on the last Sunday in September. As a guest of honor of the event, Uta will join the hundreds of thousands of spectators who line the fast course to cheer the runners on their way. For Uta, the fantastic race in Germany’s capital is close to her heart. “The Berlin fans are simply great,” she says. “The way people appreciate and love the marathon means a lot to me. And the atmosphere is unforgettable as thousands of runners from all over the world make their way through our lovely city on a race course that is so rich in history.”
It was 23 years ago that Uta won the prestigious Berlin Marathon in one of its most memorable editions: held three days before the historic reunification of East and West Germany. Only a few months earlier she had left her home in East Germany to live in freedom in the West, and her participation in the “Reunification Marathon”—routed from West Berlin through the Brandenburg Gate into East Berlin—was emotional and meaningful for the three-time Berlin champion. She has such fond memories from this famous race and looks forward to sharing them again this year with participants and her friends.

The Columbine Elementary School offers its students a number of activities that aim to support its academic program, build character, and nurture creativity. An important part of these efforts is the annual Mile Marathon—a fun and sporty end-of-the-school-year celebration for several hundred attending kids.

The support of these professional runners inspires the students to be even more enthusiastic about the joys of physical activity, fitness, and health. The kids will parade out, starting at 8:45 am, followed by the introduction of the guest runners. Uta is happy to join the kids once again for this excitement-filled run. Come and help us cheer them on during their big race day!
