Viktor Röthlin has celebrated the greatest victory of his career in Tokyo. The Swiss won the prestigious Tokyo Marathon in the first-class time of 2:07:23. This meant the 33-year-old improved his own national record of 2:08:20, set last year in Zurich, by almost a minute. For the first time this edition of the Tokyo Marathon was not an elite men's race, but an event for mass participation.

Meseret Defar Begins Olympic Year With World Record

Meseret Defar has begun the Olympic year right where she left off last year—with a world record. The 24-year-old Ethiopian covered the rarely run distance of 2 miles at the Boston indoor meeting in 9:10.50. With that time, Defar bettered the old mark, set by the American Regina Jacobs at the same meeting six years ago, of 9:23.38. Defar's time brings the indoor 2-mile standard much closer in line with the world indoor marks for 3,000m and 5,000m.

Unrest in Kenya Affects Running Stars

The unrest in Kenya following the disputed presidential election of Mwai Kibaki has also affected its country’s running stars. An Olympic competitor beaten to death, a world champion injured and a world junior cross country champion unable to make the journey to a race in Europe – those are only three ramifications of the violence and chaos holding sway in the western part of the country.

Kenyan Double in Bolzano

With Kenyans once again dominating the road running scene in 2007, it was only fitting that the year finished for them in the same style. Athletes from the top running nation in the world celebrated a double win at the highly rated New Year’s Eve race in Bolzano: first Sylvia Kibet won the 5K in 16:01, and then Edwin Cheruiyot Soi took the men’s 10K in 28:50.

World Championships: Kibet Wins Marathon Gold

Luke Kibet is the new world marathon champion. The Kenyan, whose biggest triumph had been his victory at the Vienna City Marathon this April, braved what were probably the toughest conditions a world championships marathon has ever seen. The 24-year-old clocked 2:15:59 and was well ahead of Mubarak Hassan Shami (Qatar/2:17:18). It was the biggest gap for a winner of a world championship race since the meet began in 1983. Kibet’s victory was also noteworthy because it was the first Kenyan world championships marathon victory in the men’s race since Douglas Wakihuri’s, who won in Rome 1987. Switzerland’s Viktor Röthlin won bronze in Osaka, finishing in 2:17:25.

World Championships: Goucher Snatches Bronze, Dibaba Takes 10,000m Despite Fall

irunesh Dibaba achieved a spectacular hat trick at the World Championships in Osaka: Although only 22 years old, the Ethiopian won gold for the third World Championships in a row-and that despite falling in the middle of the 10,000m. She clocked 31:55.41 and will now try to defend the 5,000m title she won in 2005. Cheruiyot Wins Wacky-Weather Boston Marathon

On a cold, rainy, windy day, Kenyan Robert Cheruiyot and Russian Lidiya Grigoryeva won the 111th Boston Marathon in the slowest times in decades. Both broke their final competitors on the short uphill on the Massachusetts Pike overpass in the 25th mile en route to winning times of 2:14:13 and 2:29:18.

Deena Kastor: “My goal is to win Boston”

Deena Kastor ran the fastest marathon in the world last year when she won the London Marathon in 2:19:36. Her time was an American record, and made her the first American to break 2:20. On Monday Kastor will be among the big favorites at the 111th Boston Marathon. Marathon Spring: Highlights in Boston, London, Rotterdam and Hamburg

April is traditionally the biggest marathon month of the year, but this year the top spring races over the classic 26.2-mile distance are grouped closer than ever. Over three weekends in the second half of the month, more than 150,000 will take part in various mass races around the world; 96,000 applied to run in the Flora London Marathon alone. London, Boston and Rotterdam traditionally have the strongest fields of the spring races. In recent years Hamburg and Paris have also consistently produced high-class results, and the Vienna Marathon has also risen to the fore on the scale of international events.

Another World Half Marathon Record for Sammy Wanjiru

Sammy Wanjiru has improved his world record for the half marathon, set just five weeks ago, by 18 seconds. The 20-year-old was a clear winner of the Pier-City-Pier race in The Hague, Netherlands in 58:35.

Wanjiru Breaks Gebrselassie’s Half Marathon World Record

Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya broke the world half marathon record with a scintillating display of front-running in the Ras Al Khaimah International Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates. Wanjiru, just 20 years old, clocked 58:53, and in the process retrieved the world record, taken from him by Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie, who ran 58:55 in Phoenix, Arizona a year ago. Then officially a junior, Wanjiru had set the previous record one year earlier, with 59:16 in Rotterdam.

Gebrselassie, Kastor and London, New York Took Top Spots in 2006

Other than in Japan, prime marathon season hasn't started yet, so it's a good time to survey what happened in 2006. The winning times of Haile Gebrselassie in Berlin and Deena Kastor in London were the fastest marathons of last year. Gebrselassie's 2:05:56 in September was the seventh-fastest performance of all time and the only sub-2:06 in 2006. Gebrselassie also had 2005's fastest time, with his 2:06:20 victory in Amsterdam.

Bekele Makes it 30 Cross Country Wins in a Row

Kenenisa Bekele has stretched his unbeaten run in cross country to 30 races. On Sunday in Seville, Spain, the Ethiopian won this event for the third time, beating his younger brother Tariku, who celebrated his 20th birthday on race day, by two seconds. The Olympic 10,000m champion and world record holder clocked 31:05 for the 10.8-K course. One of the few Kenyans who have beaten Bekele in a 5,000m track race had no chance in Seville: Abraham Chebii came in third, 25 seconds behind the winner.

Ryan Hall Breaks One-hour Barrier and U.S. Half Marathon Record

KIMbia’s Nyariki Wins Inaugural NYC Half Marathon

KIMbia's Tom Nyariki capped a stellar August by winning this morning's NYC Half Marathon in Manhattan. In his first half marathon, Nyariki ran 1:01:22 hours to win by six seconds over Olympic marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi. Two-time American Olympian Abdi Abdirahman, who ran 27:22 minutes for 10,000 meters on the track earlier this summer, was third in 1:01:34. The three ran together until the final kilometer, when Nyariki surged decisively and permanently gapped first Abdirahman, and then Keflezighi.

Stefano Baldini Takes Second European Marathon Gold

Compared to the sensational marathon triumph of Ulrike Maisch in the women's European Championships marathon, there was little surprise in the men’s marathon race for gold one day later. The heavy favorite, Italian Stefano Baldini, won in 2:11:32 hours. The 35-year-old was also the European champion in 1998, and is the reigning Olympic champion in the event. The silver medalist, however, was a surprise, with Switzerland's Viktor Röthlin placing second in 2:11:50 ahead of Spaniard Julio Rey (2:12:37).

Ulrike Maisch Sensationally Wins European Marathon

German Athletics has a female counterpart of Jan Fitschen: Four days after the totally unexpected 10,000 meter triumph by Fitschen, Ulrike Maisch was the surprise winner today in the marathon at the European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. Maisch ran 2:30:01 hours, a personal best, to finish well ahead of Olivera Jevtic (Serbia/2:30:27) and Russian Irina Permitina (2:30:53).

Inga Abitova Wins Top-Class 10,000m European Championships Final, Mockenhaupt Outwits Mikitenko

The first long-distance final at the European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden produced a superb race. In the women's 10,000 meters, Russian Inga Abitova won the gold medal by improving her personal best by nearly a minute to 30:31.42 minutes. Norway's Susanne Wigene produced an unexpected Scandinavian success with a great final sprint, finishing second in 30:32.36. Third was Russian Lidiya Grigoryewa in 30:32.72.

Germany’s Jan Fitschen Surprises with 10,000m Win at European Championships

Four years after Dieter Baumann won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Munich, another German runner provided a sensation at the current continental championships: 29-year-old Jan Fitschen won the gold medal in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a personal best of 28:10.94 minutes, a victory that could well be the biggest surprise of the whole European Championships.

Tom Nyariki overtook his KIMbia teammate Gilbert Okari to win this morning's Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. KIMbia Runners Dominate Bellin 10K

Double Olympic Champion Hicham El Guerrouj Ends his Career

The best middle distance runner of the last decade has ended his career: Hicham El Guerrouj announced his retirement from the sport at a press conference in Casablanca. The 31 year-old Moroccan holds three world records: 1500 meters (3:26.00 minutes), the Mile (3:43.13) and 2,000m (4:44.79). Hicham El Guerrouj, who was unbeaten in 84 out of 89 competitions at the 1500m since 1986, crowned his career with a double win at the Olympic Games in Athens, taking the 1,500m and the 5,000m.

Irina Mikitenko Wins Avon Running Berlin Women’s Race and Plans Debut in Marathon

The big favorite took hold sovereign: Irina Mikitenko won the 23rd AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s race. The 33 year-old who finished seventh in the Olympic 5,000 meters in Athens 2004, ran the 10 kilometers in 33:45 minutes. She had a winning margin of exactly one minute to Claudia Dreher (34:45). Third was Magdaline Chemjor (Kenya) in 35:18. Mikitenko then announced that she is planning to run her marathon debut this fall.

Paul Tergat: “I wish my Berlin record could stay forever—I am sure I will come back to Berlin one day”

Paul Tergat broke the world record at the real,- Berlin-Marathon 2003. His mark of 2:04:55 hours still stands as a record today. Not even his archrival Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia) did ever come near to the mark with which Paul Tergat wrote history. Felix Limo and Deena Kastor Win London Marathon While Haile Gebrselassie is Left Behind

The best elite field ever in the Flora London Marathon produced spectacular results and a big surprise. While Kenyan Felix Limo reached the finish at the Buckingham Palace after 2:06:39 hours, Haile Gebrselassie finished ninth in his third marathon with a time of 2:09:05. The highlight of the day was achieved by American Deena Kastor, who finished in 2:19:36 and set a new continental record. She is now the fourth fastest marathon runner in the world.

The 110th edition of the BAA Boston Marathon will be started today. It is exactly ten years ago when one of the most dramatic and biggest marathons ever took place in Boston. Meseret Defar Breaks 5K World Record in Carlsbad

The Ethiopian Meseret Defar set a new 5-kilometer world record in Carlsbad (California). The 22 year old 5,000-meter Olympic Champion of 2004 in Athens won in 14:46 minutes. In the men’s race the winner came from Ethiopia as well: Abreham Cherkose clocked 13:15.

Kenenisa Bekele Wins Fifth World Cross Double

Kenenisa Bekele continued his outstanding series at the last weekend’s IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka (Japan). The Ethiopian completed a fifth double in a row at these championships. This is a unique achievement in the history of athletics and will probably never be surpassed. Starting next year, there will be only one long distance race held at these championships. The short distance is cancelled.

Kosgei Back to his Best while Masai Beats Kastor in Berlin

If anyone doubted that Paul Kosgei could regain the top flight as a distance runner, those doubts were disproved when the 2002 world champion for the distance won the Berlin Half Marathon on Sunday. Kosgei broke the Kenyan record with 59:07 minutes, 22 seconds ahead of his compatriot Evans Cheruiyot. Only Haile Gebrselassie with 58:55 at Tempe in the USA on January 15 has run faster this year and that is a performance awaiting ratification as a world record. Kosgei also bettered the Berlin course record by 44 seconds.

Start of the WMM: 110th BAA Boston-Marathon Announces Elite Field

John Hancock Financial Services today announced its elite team of 31 marathon runners from 13 countries, including American Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi, defending champion Hailu Negussie from Ethiopia, and past champions Timothy Cherigat and Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya. The race is set for Monday, April 17, 2006. This will be John Hancock’s 21st year as principal sponsor of the event. It was ten years ago that Uta won the BAA Boston Marathon for the third time in a row. Therefore she will be in Boston as a guest of honor.

Gebrselassie Breaks 25K World Record

Haile Gebrselassie won the 25-kilometer race of Alphen. Clocking 1:11:37 hours the Ethiopian improved the world record of Kenyan Paul Kosgei by 1:08 minutes. Kosgei had run 1:12:45 on 9th May 2004 in Berlin, Germany. On a clear sunny day in cold temperatures the African was far too strong for his competitors. The 25K race was incorporated in the normal 20 kilometers of Alphen. It is one of the most famous road races in the Netherlands.

A Double for Antje Möldner at German Indoors

A runner was the only athlete who managed a double at the German Indoor Championships in Karlsruhe during the past weekend: Antje Möldner won the 3,000 meters and the 1,500m. First she clocked 9:14.69 minutes on Saturday, then she ran 4:29.13 minutes a day later. But the quality of the running events at these championships was low key.
